Volunteer tutors sought
The Northshore School District needs adult volunteers to tutor other adults in learning English.
The volunteer call is an outgrowth of a new literacy coalition formed two years ago by the school district's ESL Program and Readiness to Learn Program, the Bothell/King County Library System, and the Eastside Literacy Council.
The coalition developed the "English-as-a-Second Language (ESL) for Adults" program to meet the growing needs of the adult ESL population in this area.
"Our mission is to reach out to the adult ESL population and help them improve their English language skills so they can become more involved in their child's education," explained Dr. Carolyn O'Keeffe, who directs the student ESL program for Northshore schools.
Volunteer ESL tutors should be able to speak, read, and write English fluently, have a good sense of humor, have good listening and people skills, and possess patience, empathy, and respect for those of different cultures, backgrounds, and ages.
