Dining In: Treats for tricksters

recipes Ghosts, goblins, and other spooky little apparitions will soon be walking the night--or parading at a school party. With Halloween just around the corner, all those little ghouls could benefit from a few healthy suggestions: Chocolate Marshmallow Spiders

marshmallow spiders

Chocolate marshmallow spiders are a fun treat to serve to little ghosts and goblins.

1 pkg. (8 squares) semisweet baking chocolate
   2 c. mini-marshmallows
   Black or red string licorice
   Assorted candies
Microwave chocolate in large microwaveable bowl on High for 2 minutes, stirring halfway through heating time. Stir until completely melted. Add marshmallows; mix lightly until completely coated. Drop by spoonfuls onto waxed paper-lined tray. Decorate with pieces of string licorice to create spiders' legs. Use additional miniature marshmallows and candies to make eyes. Refrigerate until chocolate is firm. Makes 2 dozen.

Fizzies Witches Brew
For the Brew:
   8 c. ginger ale
   4 c. water
   6 tablets Ooz'n Orange Fizzies (1 package)
For the Goo:
2 pkgs. candy in the shape of spiders, bats, and worms
Water for ice cubes and frozen "hands"
   Ice cube trays
Clean rubber household gloves and twist-ties
The night before: Place candy into ice cube trays (1-2 pieces per cube) and fill with water. Fill two clean rubber gloves with water, add candy and seal with a twist-tie. Place ice cube trays and gloves in freezer and leave overnight.
At the party: Heat ginger ale on stove until warm. Pour warm ginger ale into a punch bowl and add tablets of Ooz'n Orange Fizzies. (Make sure your little ghosts and goblins are gathered 'round the "cauldron" to watch the potion foam and froth.) When you're ready to drink the brew, slip or cut frozen "hands" from gloves. Add 4 cups cold water, frozen "hands," and ice cubes.

Creepy Jigglers
   2-1/2 c. boiling water
3 pkgs. (4-serving size) grape flavored gelatin
Stir boiling water into gelatins in large bowl for 3 minutes or until completely dissolved (do not add cold water). Pour into 13x9-inch pan. Refrigerate at least 3 hours until firm.
Dip bottom of pan in warm water about 15 seconds. Cut into Halloween shapes with cookie cutters all the way through the gelatin. (To cut Halloween shapes without cookie cutters, place paper or cardboard patterns on gelatin. Cut around patterns with sharp knife.) Lift from pan. Makes about 24 pieces.
