Santa is answering letters
For the third year, the Bothell High School Honor Society is sponsoring a North Pole Mail Box at Country Village through Dec. 20. Children of all ages, including adults, can drop their letters to Santa at the mailbox located behind the Clock Tower Building in front of Santa Photos. Santa will personally answer those writers who put a return address on their letters. There is no charge; just look for the red and white striped pole. Call 483-2250.
Redhook looking for 'Beer Buddies'
During the holiday season, Redhook Ale Brewery, in order to reward their patrons who are designated drivers, has created their Beer Buddies program. At both the Forecaster's Pub in Woodinville and the Trolleyman Pub in Fremont, those who wish to ensure a safe drive home by not drinking may sign up with a bartender and receive an official Beer Buddies button. This will entitle them to free non-alcoholic beverages for the duration of that visit and a parting gift.
Heating bill help
The Multi-Service Cemter will begin scheduling appointments Dec. 31 for those who need help paying winter heating bills, by phone 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday though Friday, except holidays. Interviews will begin Jan. 6. Those needing assistance are advised to call early, as appointment times fill up quickly. The number to call is 869-6027. Bring your Social Security number, income documentation, home-heating bill, and documentation of home address.
Books for Christmas
A Field Guide to the Grand Canyon, by Stephen R. Whitney, covers nearly the entire scope of natural phenomena in the area. Whitney is the author of books such as Field Guide to the Cascades and Olympics and Nature Walks In And Around Seattle. He lives in Seattle.
Hiking Oregon's Geology, by Ellen Morris Bishop and John Eliot Allen, escorts its readers on a tour of Oregon's scenic and geologically interesting places. Divided into the state's geological regions for easy reference, it includes an appendix with an identification guide and descriptions of common rocks and minerals. Bishop is a former contributor to the Oregonian and is a geologist, freelance writer, and photographer.

WSU releases Cold War adventure
A Cold War adventure story entitled Hair of the Dog: Tales from Aboard a Russian Trawler has recently been published by the Washington State University Press. The ironic novel brings together two fishermen, an American and a Russian, and tells of their exploits as they fish in the North Pacific. It is available at bookstores or directly from WSU press. The Parent-Child Center of Shoreline Community College has announced that it is a sponsor of the USDA Child and Adult Care Food Program administered by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction. Meals will be made available to all enrolled children without regard to race, color, disability, age, sex, or national origin.
