Woodinville youth one of two killed in avalanche
Matt Ichihashi, 19, of Woodinville was tragically found dead with his hiking partner, Rob Mattson, 19, of Mill Creek late December 25 after the two were trapped in an avalanche about two miles west of the Alpental Ski area. Search and rescue crews found them under compacted snow approximately 500 feet from their tent.
Ichihasi and Mattson had left on Sunday, Dec. 22, on what was planned to be a two-day hiking and camping experience in the mountains. Expected back at 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 23, the two were reported missing at about 10 p.m. Search and rescue crews began their search early on Dec. 24. Heavy snow hampered the search. On Dec. 25, the rescue crew heard a signal from an avalanche beacon which one of the two was carrying. Crews dug through the snow and debris and at approximately 5 p.m. found the bodies.
Officials belive the avalanche occured last Monday morning.
King County Search and Rescue was joined by ski patrol volunteers and Seattle Mountain Rescue in the search.
