Kenmore carport cave-in damages cars
Covered carports at the Cedar Park Apartments at 7512 NE Bothell Way near Kenmore Lanes collapsed as a result of heavy snowfall and rain during the early morning hours of Dec. 29. Some residents were able to remove their vehicles before the corrugated structures caved in.
According to a tenant's relative, the manager of the apartment complex considers the collapse to be an "act of God" and will not pay for the damages sustained by vehicles affected. The wreckage has been cleared away but it hasn't been decided whether or not the carports will be rebuilt.
Car-tree fatality on Avondale
A 47-year-old Redmond man was killed and his 13-year-old son was injured Dec. 31 when a falling tree struck the roof of his vehicle.
According to Redmond Police Officer Kristi Wilson, the tree fell from the east side of Avondale near NE 104th at 3:54 p.m., killing Paul Douglas Gibson. His son, Zachary, who was seated in the back seat of the car, was transported to Harborview Hospital with skull and facial fractures. He was stabilized later that night. Zachary is a seventh grader at Cedar Park Christian School in Bothell.
It is believed that the heavy rains and high winds associated with the back-to-back snow and rain storms contributed to the weakening of the root support for the tree.
