Molbak's and Berg's at Flower & Garden Show
by Andrew Walgamott
Winter blahs got you down? Leaden skies yield to vibrant plants at the Northwest Flower and Garden Show, Feb. 5-9.
Held at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center in downtown Seattle, the ninth annual event brings refreshing color and hope of a bright spring. One of the three largest shows of its kind in North America, the exhibits take up the fourth and sixth floors with the theme "Romance in Bloom".
Several local companies have designed gardens under this motif, including Berg's Landscaping, "The Sylvan Sanctuary: A Romantic Escape," and Molbak's, "April in Paris." Along with 31 other gardens, there will be 100 free Sunset magazine seminars and 300 commercial booths offering uncommon plants and bulbs, patio furniture, gazebos, tools, bird houses, and a myriad of other garden accesories.
Once again, Berg's Landscaping will participate in the garden show. This year, they have created a wooded backyard escape where lovers can wander amid the seclusion of timber and shrubbery after a traffic-jammed day.
Molbak's and architect Robert Chittock transform 1800 square feet into a formal Parisian garden complete with elegant statues, bronze fountains, and beautiful plants. Ivy covered walls, pedestals, and urns frame a French flag, blooming tri-colored red, white, and blue.
Cottage Creek Nursery's Robert Nelson has been chosen to speak at two seminars Feb. 5. He will be discussing rose pruning in the Baker Room at noon, and in the Hood Room at 1:45 p.m., he will talk about roses for the Northwest.
Tickets are $10.50 if purchased in advance at Molbak's and all U.S. Bank branches, and $12.50 at the door. Children 11 and under are admitted free when accompanied by an adult.
To get to the convention center, take I-5 southbound to Union St., exit 165B. Turn right on 7th Ave. and right again on Pike St. Parking is available below the center. Metro shuttles leave from the large parking lot south of Northgate Shopping Center beginning at 8:15 each morning. Roundtrip shuttle tickets are $2 per person.
Hours are from 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Sunday. For more information, call the garden show hotline at 1-800-229-6311. Check out the show's website at http://www.gardenu.com/flowershow/.
