Workshop on coaching methods
Frank Smoll, a recognized sports psychologist, will offer a workshop in the Northshore School District focusing on effective coaching. The three-hour workshop will be held on Saturday, March 1 from 9 a.m. to noon at Ricketts Auditorium, 18315 Bothell Way NE, Bothell. It is open to parents as well as coaches at any level.
The teaching and motivational methods used by coaches can mean the differences between a positive or negative experience for kids. The Coach Effectiveness Training (CET) program is designed to improve psychological relations between youth coaches and athletes. Smoll believes that coaches should use encouragement and positive reinforcement rather than punishment. The tips and techniques he will share in this workshop are tested and their effect on kids is known.
Topics will include such things as how and when to encourage; what not to do after player mistakes; motivating athletes; gaining player respect; combating fear of failure; giving corrective instruction; improving communication skills; and counteracting parental pressure. Interaction between Smoll and audience participants will be encouraged.
The workshop costs $10 per person for those who register before Feb. 26; tickets sold after Feb. 26 are $15. Checks should be made payable to the Northshore School District and mailed to the Northshore School District Staff Development Office, 18315 Bothell Way NE, Bothell, WA 98011.
