Fire District considering merger
by Al Hooper
During the Commissioner's meeting of the Fire District on Tuesday the 18th of March, Commissioner David Callon reported to the Board that he and Chairman Ben May had recently attended a meeting with Mayor Rosemary Ives of Redmond. The Woodinville Fire Board, along with the Redmond Fire District, is exploring the possiblity of merging the two departments.
In explanation, Commissioner Don Eddy said in an interview after the meeting that the Board has been talking about the idea for some time. In elaboration, Eddy stated that Woodinville "needs to explore any and all avenues that may present a way to better serve the community, and at the same time help to contain costs."
Eddy couldn't recall exactly when the Board had first raised the topic of a possible merger. However, further inquiry with the District's administrative staff reveals that the subject has been discussed several times in the recent past.
Both Mayor Ives and Redmond Fire Chief John Ryan were unavailable for comment at press time.
