Musicians bring home top awards
The WHS Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Orchestra, and Jazz Ensemble can toot their own horns after bringing home top awards from the Heritage International Music Festival in California.
The Woodinville High School Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Orchestra, and Jazz Ensemble traveled to Anaheim, California for the annual Heritage International Music Festival May 8-12. The 120 students competed with other top music groups from throughout the United States, all by invitation, and won the following top awards:
The Symphonic Band also won the Most Outstanding Instrumental Group Trophy. The combined scores of the Orchestra and Symphonic Band earned WHS the Most Outstanding Instrumental Program Trophy. The Symphonic Band earned the Adjudicators Award for scoring an average 95.67 out of a possible 100 points. The award is given to groups who earn over 95. WHS Instrumental Groups also earned the Sweepstakes Trophy, which is given to the school with the highest combined score.
- WHS Orchestra: Gold Award, 1st Place AA Division
- WHS Jazz Ensemble: Gold Award, 1st Place AA Division
- WHS Concert Band: Silver Award, 1st Place A Division
- WHS Symphonic Band: Gold Award, 1st Place AA Division
The students in the music program are directed by Jim Rice. Fifteen chaperones accompanied the students.
"Special music was chosen to show off the each group's strengths. We looked forward to the competition and were eager to have the opportunity to play for and hear from other groups around the country. We also had the opportunity to have some fun at Disneyland and Knott's Berry Farm," said Rice.
The WHS Orchestra and Symphonic Band recently earned superior ratings at the Kingco League Music Festival.
