County to overhaul garbage service
by Andrew Walgamott
Private garbage haulers are bypassing county transfer stations and landfills, resulting in a loss in revenue for the county and potentially an increase in collection fees for customers. Beginning in July, the King County Department of Natural Resources will begin negotiating with private hauling companies, the Suburban Cities Association, and County labor representatives on how best to provide solid waste management for businesses and residents in the future. Discussions are expected to wrap up in January, 1998.
According to King County estimates, private haulers can dispose of trash at out-of-county landfills for $40-$45 per ton. Cost to dump at the county operated Cedar Hills landfill is $51.25 per ton. Cost to dump at county transfer stations is $74.25 per ton.
