Reminder: Hepatitis B vaccine required before school

All children enrolled in daycare, preschool or kindergarten must have a series of three Hepatitis B vaccinations by September. Those who fail to meet these requirements will not be allowed to return to school. In addition, the American Academy of Pediatrics also recommends, but does not require, Hepatitis B vaccinations for all infants, all children 11 and 12 years old who were not immunized as infants and all teenagers who have not yet been vaccinated.

Hepatitis B is an infection of the liver that may develop into long-term liver disease. Children may get the vaccinations from their pediatricians or at local health department immunization clinics. For more information about Hepatitis B or the new state requirement, call (206) 621-4257.
