Water Commissioners announce fall campaign
by Andrew Walgamott
Three commissioners on the board of the Woodinville Water District, including one who has been accused of misuse of district funds and equipment, said they will run for office in the fall. Commissioners Walter Backstrom, Maureen Jewitt and Gwenn Maxfield announced their intentions at a recent district meeting.
Maxfield is running for her second term, having been appointed and then elected to office in 1991. She also serves as chairwoman for the Cascade Water Alliance, a consortium of 26 Eastside city and water districts. Backstrom and Jewitt are facing their first election.
Backstrom was appointed in April, 1996. He and Commissioner Ken Goodwin joined the board after it was expanded from three to five members last year. They have staggered terms. A state audit will probe alleged misuse of district funds and equipment by Backstrom in 1996 and 1997. Results are expected in August. Jewitt was appointed last October after Ed Cebron resigned.
