NW News Staff
Eighteen-year-old Mary Swain of Woodinville High School has won one of seven cardiovascular research scholarships awarded annually through the American Heart Association's Introduction to Cardiovascular Research Program.
Swain and six other talented young science students in Washington State will receive a $3,000 grant from the American Heart Association making it possible for them to work under the supervision of an experienced laboratory research "mentor" this summer.
The American Heart Association's Research Committee selected Swain from a group of more than 85 student applicants. The committee judged students based on academic record, letters of recommendation and a statement of interest.
The scholarship program was created by the American Heart Association to attract students to a career in biomedical science by giving them the opportunity to become acquainted with cardiovascular research.
