Defensive Team Effort Wins Game for Falcons
by Russ Paris
The Woodinville defense dominated play as they held the Redmond Mustangs to just 7 yards rushing last Friday night in a 4A Kingco football win, 16-13. The 1st quarter was a defensive struggle ,with the game played between the 40 yard lines. Unlike Redmond, who stacked the line of scrimmage, the Falcons played their normal defensive game with peerless abandon. The defense held the Mustangs scoreless until the offense got on track in the 2nd period. Offensively, the Falcons could not move the ball until Coach Agnew sent in Brad Kertson, the 5'10", 175 lb. sparkplug. Kertson immediately moved the ball down field on a 26 yard run to put Curtis Cruz in position for a 27 yard field goal and a 3-0 Falcon lead.
The 3rd period scoring started with the Mustangs taking a 7-3 lead on a 19 yard touchdown pass from Tyler Smith. The Falcons answered with a Jeremy Tager burst off tackle. He was hit at the five, dragging Redmond defenders into the end zone for a touchdown that put the Falcons on top 9-7. At the 10:42 mark of the 4th period, Kertson hit tight end Zach Tuiasosopo over the middle and he rambled for 30 yards, putting WHS ahead for good,16-13. Redmond tried to fight back through the air, but great defensive play in the secondary from Kris Billmaier stopped the Mustangs.
"We beat a strong Redmond team. They had 3 players at 300 lbs. It was a great team effort, we played fundamentally sound and tackled well," said asst. coach Mike Bertram.
