On The Road With Carol

The 1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX AWD

Test driving this sexy, red car was fun, not only because the 1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse is a jazzy, fast moving sports coupe, but because the looks you get driving it. It is just great to start the car, hear the racy sound, back up and peel out - just a little.
The 1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSW AWD is definitely a sporty car. With the wide windows down, the sunroof open and the radio blaring, this car can feel a lot like a convertible. The styling is distinctive with sleek lines, the high, eclipsed-shaped spoiler in back and the raised surface on the front hood on the driver's side.
Introduced in 1995 and updated each year since, the Eclipse's front has large air intakes, and in the back, full-width taillamps. With a .30 drag coefficient, you can easily move around with this car. The GSX is equipped with a turbocharge and intercooled 16-value 2.0 -liter DOHC engine. With the 5-speed manual transmission, that comes standard with this car, the engine produces 210 hp at 6,000 rpm and 214 lbs-ft of torque at 3,000 rpm. The 4-speed automatic transmission is available and changes the rpm to 205 hp and torque to 220 lbs-ft. The sequential fuel injection is electronically controlled. Dual engine stabilizers, counter-rotating shafts inside the engine block, help offset the vibration.
The car corners great - tight to the curve, complete control. This is an all-wheel drive vehicle and has 4-wheel independent suspension and power assist 4-wheel disc brakes. You lower yourself into this car. The driver's seat is powered to move where you want, how high and at what angle. All front seats come standard as leather, and they are comfortable, even in the back. The side pockets on the door are very narrow. The center console has several available spaces for coins, tapes, and other stuff. Interestingly, the passenger has a lighted mirror on the visor but the driver side does not. It did have three buttons on the visor, one which lite up, but I never did find out what these buttons were for.
The Infinity sound system is very nice and clear. You just punch your choice of CD, AM/FM, or Cassette and go from there to the other choices. The car has dual front air bags, 3-point safety belts and side-guard door beams for safety. There is a large cargo area in the back with a cargo cover to keep your valuables hidden. This is a nice car for the price and worth a look.
