Cedarcrest High School Marching Band to perform

parade1

The Cedarcrest High School Band will march in the Duvall Days Parade on Saturday, May 16 with the CHS Cheer Squad and the CHS Drill Team. The remainder of May and June will be equally busy for the musicians of Cedarcrest as there are still concerts, recitals and festivals.

The Cedarcrest High School Music Department has grown by leaps in bounds in the past two years. Student leadership in bands and choirs, and its full time music teacher have all become vital components of the thriving program at CHS. During the 1997-98 school year, both jazz band and jazz choir have been added to the music program, each meeting at 6:30 a.m. on alternating mornings. In addition to jazz classes, the guitar class has become a popular course for beginners through intermediate and advanced players.

Ryan Lewis, CHS Music Instructor and the musicians at Cedarcrest have welcomed many guest artists to the classroom and the school including The Generation Gap Big Band, M-PACT!, Navy Band Seattle-Cascade, studio alto sax pro Robbie Jordan, Seattle artist Ted Kamp (Bass/guitar/vocal), and guest clinician, Jerry McManus, from Bellevue Community College.

This spring, music groups and individuals from Cedarcrest have participated in the Green River Jazz Festival, the Pierce College Jazz Expo, All State Choir, Vocal solo and ensemble contests, and King Coounty Large Group Band and Choral Festivals. Cedarcrest's Marching Band has recently returned from their second trip to The Apple Blossom Parade in Wenatchee.

Band will begin the 1998-1999 year early with leadership camps, drum major camps, and Marching Camp. The band has already scheduled the University of Washington as its first stop--Husky Marching Band Day in Husky Stadium. An end of the musical extravaganza, fund raisers and equipment purchases are in the planning stages with the Parent Support Organization called "R.H.Y.T.H.M.--Riverview Helping Youth To Have Music!" If you have any questions or comments about the Cedarcrest Music Department or would like to become an active Parent or Booster with RHYTHM, please call Ryan Lewis, at Cedarcrest High School at 425-788-7116, ext. 1632.
