The Woodinville Falcon varsity baseball team defeated Bothell to win the Kingco conference and then advanced to last Saturday's State 4A Regional Playoff game against Wilson of Tacoma. Although the Falcons won the opener against Wilson 6-0 at Bannerwood Field in Bellevue, they were eliminated in the game against Snohomish, 11-7. In the Wilson game the Falcons came out swinging the bat. Justin Hart doubled. Then Kris Billmaier reached 1st. Snider got the run batted in with his hit to left field, Woodinville 2, Wilson 0 at the end of the 1st inning.
The 4th inning saw Brad Wecker lead off with a single. He was advanced by Justin Hart's 2nd hit. Head Coach Terry Agnew advanced his runners by calling for and getting a double steal. Travis Ault singled and drove in two more Falcon runs.
Woodinville increased their lead to 4 - 0. The game's most exciting play came in the 5th. Curtis Cruz singled to 1st. Mike Wagner single advanced him to 3rd. Then Wagner, in a deliberate sacrifice, ran to 2nd, stopped one half way, and ran back to 1st. He initially avoided the Wilson tag out but before he was finally tagged in all the commotion. Cruz was able to go unnoticed to home and score another run for Woodinville. It was 5-0, Falcons leading in the 5th. The scoring ended when Curtis Cruz hit a long ball for a 4-bagger. The home run made it 6-0 Falcons winning in the final score.
The real story of the game was the Falcon's ace pitcher, Shawn Kohn, named the league's most valuable player. He pitched a 2-hitter, giving up no walks. "I was a little nervous but after they got that 1st hit in the 2nd inning, I settled down and they did not get another hit until the 7th. I felt real good out there and I'm just glad I could help my Falcon teammates to be one of the elite 8 teams in the state," said Kohn, whose record is now 11 wins, 0 losses. Woodinville's team record is 16 wins, 7 losses.
