Maltby to build biggest snow cone
by Andrew Walgamott
MALTBY--Maltby will be home to the world's largest snow cone for a few brief minutes this August.
"The Guinness Book of World Records" has approved the local recreation district's plans to build a steel cone and fill it with a ton of crushed ice during "Maltby Mania" August 1 at Maltby Community Park.
The cone will measure five feet in diameter and four feet tall. The lower two feet will be set in concrete to keep it from tipping over, according to Kurt Merriman, a professional engineer involved in the project.
Merriman said the cone will be built under an awning, ice dumped in, flavored and then doled into cups to be eaten after a brief photo op. He said a flavor hasn't been decided on, but said the cone may be red, blue and green. Allied Ice of Seattle is donating the ice.
Building the cone is a publicity stunt to draw attention to the East County Park and Recreation District which has the same boundaries as the Monroe School District, Merriman said. The district puts on Maltby Mania, and offers programs, field trips and park activities. To set this first of its kind record, Merriman said Guinness is requiring a health district official be present to make sure the cone is edible, another person to verify its weight and clippings from newspapers be sent in documenting the event. If they're successful, the district will have set the benchmark in a new category of records.
Maltby Mania is an annual family event featuring music, food, games, crafts and fireworks from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. The park is located at 20322 Broadway Avenue. (.5 miles north of the Paradise Lake Road-State Route 522 stop).
