WOODINVILLE--Employees of a local winery fought a suspicious grass fire with a garden hose and shovel before fire fighters from Woodinville and Bothell arrived and put the blaze out last Friday afternoon.
The fire began below an onramp to eastbound State Route 522 at the 132nd Ave. N.E. overpass and quickly scorched a 100-foot by 100-foot area of grass, Scotch broom, downed limbs as well as climbing up a dead cottonwood. A grey cloud of smoke floated out over Woodinville.
Matt Loso and other employees of Silver Lake Winery stretched out a garden hose 150-feet, spraying down the lower side of the fire while Denise Todd of Bothell battled flames with a shovel.
Arriving fire fighters from the Woodinville Fire and Life Safety District and Bothell Fire Department took over, attacking the fire from the onramp, quickly getting it under control.
WFLSD Battalion Chief Cliff Griffin said the origin of the fire is under investigation. There is a well-worn trail through the area.
