Woodmoor's Colleran named PE teacher of the year
Renee Colleran, physical education teacher at Woodmoor Elementary since it opened seven years ago, has been named the Elementary School Physical Educator of the Year by the Washington Alliance For Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (WAHPERD).
Colleran received the award on Oct. 24 at the state convention in Yakima. She is now eligible to receive a regional award representing Washington for the Northwest district.
Some of Collerans's innovative programs include:
Colleran, who is a frequent presenter at state, district, and National Physical Education conventions, has been on the Washington Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance Board for three years. The office she most recently held was vice president for Special Populations.
- Team Time: a physical education and music program integrating music, P.E., and classroom curriculum, taught with teachers Sharon Potts and Patti Bagnell.
- A Fitness Music Lab: a program which consists of a fitness room with 30 active stations for 5th and 6th graders to workout and learn about their cardiovascular and muscular fitness and endurance. This program is funded through grants written by Colleran and Sharon Potts.
- Family fitness nights offered several times a year: These nights encourage families to get fit and stay fit together. Parents are introduced to the heart monitors used in the fitness music labs so that they can better understand the equipment their children use.
