Local restaurateur, national chain settle on name flap

BOTHELL--A tussle over a name has been settled between the owners of Bothell's Canyons Restaurant and the Dallas-based Canyon Cafe. Jack Baum of Canyon Cafe, a 16 restaurant, seven state chain, agreed to change the name of his new eatery at the Redmond Town Center to "Sam's Cafe" after a face-to-face meeting with Scott Perry, owner of Canyons. A U.S. District Court Judge had issued a temporary injunction in Perry's favor, finding him the "senior user" of the term "Canyon" in the Puget Sound area. Canyons has been in business near the intersection of State Route 527 and Interstate 405 since 1993. The Southwestern-style restaurant had sales of $2 million in 1997, according to a company press release, and may also expand into Redmond. Canyon Cafe also serves Southwestern cooking.
