Captain Douglas Knight of the Northshore Fire Department shows off the department's new Chevy Suburban command vehicle. It will respond to fire calls, traffic accidents, and serious medical emergencies. The vehicle is equipped with the radios and support equipment needed to run such incidents. The four-wheel drive vehicle may also be used to transport patients during snowy and icy conditions.

Also new in 1999 is the addition of a new supervisory position, the "command officer," who will lead emergency operation on a 24-hour shift basis. The Northshore Fire Department protects about 31,000 residents in Kenmore and Lake Forest Park.
