Free income tax preparation

Beginning this month, volunteers throughout the state of Washington are offering free income preparation through the Tax-Aide program. Co-sponsored by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) and the Internal Revenue Service, Tax-Aide provides assistance to people who might otherwise find it difficult to meet their obligations to file.

The assistance program serves the needs of those with low to moderate income including the elderly, disabled, and non-English speaking individuals. Tax-Aide assistance sites can be found in libraries, places of worship and community centers.

People coming for assistance are advised to bring all current tax information, including W-2s (wage information), 1099s (interest and dividend income), and, if they itemize deductions, records showing their medical expenses, mortgage interest, property taxes, and other deductible expenses. It is recommended that they also bring a copy of their previous year's tax return. Free electronic filing is available at some sites.

For information in the nearest sites, call 1-800-829-1040 or the AARP Tax-Aide line at 1-888-227-7669.
