Local student wins four chess championships

   Overlake School sixth grader Peter Miller, son of Al and Lizz Miller of Hollywood Hill, has won first place in the intermediate division at four recent Scholastic Chess Tournaments. He tied for first place with four other undefeated players at the Bryant Fall Classic Open on Dec. 5 and at the Spinning Elementary Open on March 6.

   Miller won first place at the Seattle Country Day Open Scholastic Chess Tournament on Feb. 6 and at the University Child Development School Open on Feb. 20. The tournaments are run Swiss-style in which nobody is eliminated. All the contestants play five games, which can last up to an hour each. Winners play winners so that for each game a constestant wins, the next opponent will be tougher.

   Peter has qualified to play in the State Scholastic Chess Tournament in Yakima in April and will also play in the Nationals in Phoenix in May.
