Obituary: Helen L. Piersma

   Duvall resident Helen Piersma, 71, died Wednesday, March 17, at Evergreen Hospice in Kirkland. Born Nov. 14, 1927 in Kirkland, New York, she had been an Eastside resident for 14 years.

   Mrs. Piersma graduated from Whitesboro Central High School in New York in 1945, from Utica School of Nursing in Utica, New York in 1960, and from a community college in Utica in 1984. She then began working as a nurse in hospitals, clinics, and a doctor's office. She last worked as a charge nurse at the Masonic Nursing Home in Utica before retiring in 1986. From 1990 to 1998, she was the resident administrative manager of Duvall Highlands Mobile Home Park.

   Mrs. Piersma's interests included gardening and her cat. She was instrumental in obtaining moving assistance for retired senior citizens with the closure of Vista Lane Mobile Home Park in Redmond. Though plagued by disabilities and poor health over the last two years, she still maintained her sense of purpose and service to others.

   Mrs. Piersma was preceded in death by her husband, Ted P. Piersma, Sr. in 1983. She is survived by her son, Ted. P. Piersma of Redmond; sister, Marjorie Hester, Durhamville, New York; grandson, David K. Piersma, Redmond; many uncles, aunts, and cousins in upstate New York.
