Six firefighters from Bothell Firefighters Union Local #2099 took part in the 8th annual Safeco Firefighter Challenge, held March 21 in Seattle, adding an additional $1,200 to the total raised for the Washington Chapter of the Leukemia Society of America.
This year, over 500 firefighters from Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia competed in the timed race to the top of the Columbia Seafirst Center while wearing full combat gear and air packs. The competitors climb a grueling 69 stories, covering 1,311 steps. Besides raising money for the fight against leukemia, the event encourages friendly competition and "bragging rights" among fire departments.
Representing Bothell were union vice president, Hugh Moag, Jim Vandertoorn, Tom McKittrick, Adam Lamb, Scott Kim, and Greg Gwyn. Moag, Lamb and Kim are the expected favorites for best times.
