Woodinville firefighters climb to aid leukemia fight

Again this year, a Woodinville Fire & Life Safety team took part in the 8th annual Safeco Firefighter Challenge held March 21. In full firefighter gear and breathing apparatus, 469 firefighters from the Northwest climbed the Columbia Seafirst Center in downtown Seattle. The course covers 69 floors and 1,311 steps with 788 feet of vertical gain.

   The Woodinville team included: Larry Laurent with a time of 17:15 finished in 69th place; Brent Systma, with a time of 17:59 was 96th; Ronald Suggs finished in 156th place with a time of 19:15; Kurt McGowan completed the course in 20:11 for a 188th finish; Paul Peterson was the 189th finisher with a time of 20:07; Matthew Durham climbed the stairs in 21:26, finishing in 238th place; Jim Rodgers captured 243rd place with a 21:29 climb time.

   As a team, Woodinville finished in 24th place. The money raised in the Challenge is used to support Leukemia Society programs.

   Among the Woodinville team's sponsors were Protect Services, McLendon Hardware, MSA, Climate Engineers, and SeaWestern.
