Somer Pedersen heads to Special Olympics World Summer Games

by Marshall Haley, staff reporter

Woodinville High School senior Somer Pedersen qualified as a bowling team member of Washington-USA, and will join 7,000 other athletes in North Carolina for the World Special Olympics from June 26-July 4.

Pedersen bowled a 177 average in the competition to qualify for the team. She will compete in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles events.

"We've bowled as a family for years," said her dad, Phil. "She gets better and I stay the same. I don't go as much anymore. Everybody wants to see their child do well, but does she have to do it in front of my friends?"

Pedersen, a Bothell resident, has competed in Special Olympics for 13 years. She is also a member of the Woodinville High School aquatics team.

"Somer is a team leader," said Falcons coach Jennifer Miller. "She trains hard to achieve her goals and always helps her teammates."
