Pacific Sound Chorus presents annual fall show

by Deborah Stone

Once again, Pacific Sound Chorus, the award-winning local women's chorus from Bellevue, is putting on their acclaimed annual show, "Pacific Standard Time," at the Everett Civic Auditorium on Oct. 9.

The all-women's group blends traditional and complex harmonies with contemporary, sophisticated musical arrangements to bring a unique sound to its à cappella style singing. Over 160 women of all ages participate in Pacific Sound Chorus and have brought it critical acclaim, including honors in worldwide competitions.

Formed in 1990, the group has become well-known for its ability to sing a broad range of music. The chorus has performed at many prestigious engagements and is currently the 1999 North Pacific Region 13 Quartet Champion.

Participating in the upcoming show in Everett are local Woodinville residents Carolyn Huber and Katy Sansburn. Huber has been with the group for seven years, but has been in the Sweet Adelines organization for thirty-six years.

"This type of singing is in my blood," says Huber. "My folks were in barbershop quartets and I joined a group when I was sixteen. I really like this style of singing because it's really fun and has a wonderful sound quality to it. It feels great to perform in front of people and introduce them to this type of singing. It is definitely having a resurgence these past years and I think it's growing in popularity once again."

Sansburn has been with Pacific Sound Chorus for two years, but began singing with the Sweet Adelines in 1990. She finds personal fulfillment in her participation with the group.

"It's a great outlet for me and I love the à cappella sound," comments Sansburn. "Relying on voice alone gives the sound such purity." She also feels that the barbershop style is becoming more respected and appreciated.

Sansburn has always sung and was a member of various choral groups in high school and college. She says, "It is such a great outlet for me and is something I do for me."

Both women sing with Pacific Sounds' award-winning quartet, Sound Design. For the Oct. 9 concert, Pacific Sound Chorus will be joined by celebrity guests Weekend Edition, the 1996 Sweet Adelines International Champions quartet, and the Gas House Gang, the 1993 Champions men's quartet.

There will be only one performance, at 8 p.m., and the show is expected to be a sell-out. For information, call 1-888-389-1800, or 206-292-ARTS.
