Woodinville's Michael Wagner commits to UW Huskies

by Russ Paris, special to the Weekly

WHS senior Michael Wagner has given the University of Washington baseball team an oral commitment for next year, receiving a scholarship in return.

UW coach Ken Knutson looks for Wagner to play third base. Wagner hit over .500 last summer as DH on the Chaffee Baseball Club of the Connie Mack League. Wagner will play first or third base for the UW.

Wagner chose to play for the Huskies instead of taking offers from Texas A&M, UCLA, and Washington State University. Stanford had also shown interest in him.

Although Wagner is a two-sport letterman in football and baseball for the Falcons, he has played baseball for 12 years, beginning with the Woodinville West Little League for six years. He then played for the Northshore Hawks, who finished as the sixth best 13- to 14-year-old team in international world series competition.

At 15, Wagner played for Transwest, a select traveling team of Eastsiders who finished third in international competition. Wagner has played two years on the WHS varsity baseball team and was named to the all-star 1st team as a designated hitter. He is the son of Dr. Mike and Margaret Wagner of Woodinville.
