Young Composers Workshop

The Seattle Symphony is accepting applications for its Young Composers Workshop. The free ten-session workshop, led by Seattle Symphony Composer in Residence Samuel Jones, will be held Monday evenings at Benaroya Hall, January through April, 2000.

The workshop, one of the Seattle Symphony's several educational programs, is designed as a working clinic for pre-college students with an interest in music composition. Three local composers will join Jones as guest speakers and guide the students in composition elements and techniques: Janice Giteck, composer and faculty member at Cornish College of the Arts; Dorothy Klotzman, Vice President and Provost of the Academy of Music Northwest; and Gavin Borchert, composer, member of the Washington Composers Forum, and music critic for The Seattle Weekly.

On Tuesday, May 9, 2000, Seattle Symphony musicians will perform chamber music compositions written by the participating young composers during the course of the four-month workshop. The public performance will be presented in the Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall in Benaroya Hall.

Students will be selected for the workshop based on their proven aptitude for reading and notating music and demonstrated composition experience, including a review of two submitted original scores.

For more information or to request an application, call (206) 336-6650. Completed applications are due by December 17, 1999. Selected participants will be notified in January.
