Petition would overthrow city's ban on fireworks

by Marshall Haley, staff reporter

WOODINVILLE--A citizen initiative petition that would overthrow the Woodinville City Council's absolute ban on Class C, or "Safe and Sane" fireworks, was filed with the City Manager's office two weeks ago.

City Manager Pete Rose told the City Council on Jan. 10 that City Attorney Wayne Tanaka would review the petition before submitting it to King County to determine its legality.

Legal petitions in Woodinville must comply with strict form and contain 8-9 percent of the number of registered voters in the last general election, which would be around 900, Rose said. Every name on the petition must belong to a legal Woodinville resident.

If legal, the petition would lead to an initiative that would require a simple majority to pass. The petition asks that sales of Class C fireworks be allowed in Woodinville, in accordance with state law, and that the sale period exceed the previous one.
