Occasionally I have checked the per-customer "wait" time until arrival at a transaction window. The average time it takes to move up one place in the line is 20 to 30 seconds. This means that if 10 people are in line, that 10th person will be at a window in 3 to 5 minutes.
The post office's particularly astonishing record is that during the Christmas mailing season, when the line of patrons (many with several packages) extended into the lobby, the average per-customer "wait" time was only 30 to 40 seconds (No. 10 would have been at the window in 5 to 7 minutes).
And all this excellent service was always performed with genuine courtesy, helpfulness, and congeniality.
