Cottage Lake water quality presentation

Debra Bouchard, King County Lake Steward, will present an update on current conditions at Cottage Lake at a public meeting to be held at the Woodinville Library on Tues., Feb. 22nd, at 7 p.m.

Cottage Lake has suffered the effects of some serious pollution: frequent and intense blooms of potentially toxic blue-green algae, very high phosphate concentrations, and swimmer's itch. Some sources of pollution have been removed due to county efforts, but more work needs to be done to make the lake habitable for fish and safe for swimming.

A Lake Management Plan, drafted in 1996 by King County Surface Water Management and the State Department of Ecology, itemized recommendations for cleanup that would bring the lake into compliance with the state's Clean Water Act and improve conditions. The plan is on file with the KC Library system.

Data from the past few years will be presented and questions answered. Discussions will likely turn to the details of forming a Lake Management District and options for funding will be explored.
