Northshore considers full-day kindergarten

Kindergarten orientation set for March 2, 7

Northshore School District is considering a full-day kindergarten program option for the 2000-2001 school year.

A half-day program will still be available at each elementary school, but parents at some sites may be offered the opportunity for a tuition-based, full-day program. A number of kindergarten teachers have been eager for this opportunity for some time, but space limitations with a growing enrollment in the school district have not made this possible in past years. The recent decline in enrollment, both districtwide and especially at the elementary level, has allowed space to explore a full-day program option.

Northshore will host a kindergarten parent orientation on March 2nd (and repeated on March 7) at 7:30 p.m. in the Ricketts building auditorium in downtown Bothell. A panel of educators will provide an overview of Northshore's current kindergarten program. Information about assisting children in preparing for kindergarten will be emphasized.

At this meeting, the district will assess the level of interest in a full-day program and make a decision about which sites might offer this option in the fall. Sites offering full-day kindergarten will be identified prior to Northshore's regular kindergarten registration. The number of full-day classrooms will be based on parent interest in each elementary service area.
