Boy Scout Troop 527 defends Klondike title

Woodinville BSA Troop 527, Scorpion Venture Patrol, successfully defended their 1999 title by taking first place at the annual Klondike Derby, held January 29.

The sponsoring unit for the troop is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, located in Woodinville. The Scorpion members include: Justin Bailey, Steve Cowling, Shawn Murray, James Rachner, Ben Tomco, and Joe Tomco.

The Klondike Derby is sponsored by the North Lakes District of the Boy Scouts of America, Chief Seattle Council. Volunteers worked under the direction of George Gombasy, a Woodinville resident and Scout leader of Troop 573.

The annual winter derby was held this year at the Ensign Ranch near Cle Elum. Competitive winter events were designed to emphasize the boys' knowledge of scout skills.

Approximately 50 Boy Scout patrols competed in a variety of scout skills events, featuring the Klondike Derby sled events: The Figure 8, Dawson's Dash (a 1/4-mile out and back course) and the Yukon Bolt (a straightaway race for over approximately 150 yards). The sleds were powered by four scouts pulling, one scout musher, and one scout riding to represent supplies.

All events were designed to emphasize and reward cohesive team work.
