The Bothell Police Department has presented the award of Officer of the Year for 1999 to Officer David Baldwin and Employee of the Year for 1999 to Senior Police Support Officer (PSO) William Kenney. The Bothell Police Officer's Guild hosted a banquet honoring the accomplishments of the two award recipients recently at the Northshore Senior Center in Bothell.

"The hard work, unselfish dedication, and personal sacrificies made by these officers did not go unnoticed," said Mark Ericks, Bothell's chief of police. "Both officers were recognized for the accomplishments by their peers."

Officer David Baldwin was instrumental in a smooth transition into the new laptop computer program, which put high-tech communication equipment into Bothell police cars. Officer Baldwin was also responsible for outfitting the new police vehicles with the new computer system, as well as training officers, from both Bothell and Lake Forest Park, in using the new system.

In addition, he was an active participant in the department's ALERT (riot control) team, that deployed to Seattle for the WTO conference, and a member of the department's crisis negotiation team. Officer Baldwin was also honored for his bravery and quick response when confronted by a dangerous suspect, who aimed and attempted to fire a loaded handgun at him. The suspect was later arrested due to Baldwin's actions.

Senior Police Support Officer William Kenney is a 10-year veteran of the Bothell Police Department. Last year, PSO Kenney was required to perform the duties of three employees, as the department was short two PSO positions. He was responsible for vehicle fleet management, prisoner transports, property room management, and multiple support functions too numerous to list.

PSO Kenney was awarded for his dedication to service and hard work as the department's "go-to guy" for 1999. This was PSO Kenney's second award, as he earned the first Employee of the Year award in 1993.
