Mark Baertschy

Local man completes degree with honors

   Mark D. Baertschy, 1988 graduate of Tolt High School, has just been awarded a Applied Science from U.C. Davis. He did his work at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

   His thesis topic, "Electron-impact ionization of atomic hydrogen," was featured in an article co-authored by Mark and a cover designed by him in the December 24, 1999 issue of Science magazine.

   Mark is a finalist for the year 2000 "Award for the Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Research in Atomic, Molecular, or Optical Physics" given by the American Physical Society. The winner is to be chosen in June 2000.

   Mark has taken a position as a research associate at the Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics in Boulder, Colorado. This is a joint operation between the National Institute for Standards and Technologies and the University of Colorado.

   Mark did his undergraduate work at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma. He is the son of David and Donna Baertschy of Duvall.
