Canadian penpals visit Northshore

Each fall, Sunrise Elementary teacher Ann Swain's students become penpals with a sixth grade class in Victoria, B.C.

Throughout the year, the children develop friendships via letters and e-mail. Then every spring, Swain takes that sixth grade class to British Columbia for a three-day Canadian adventure.

This year for the first time, students from Willows Elementary School in Victoria came here for a three-day visit. They enjoyed a welcoming pizza party and shadow puppet show. Then, the two classes of buddies toured downtown Seattle's Pike's Place Market, Monorail Dock Bus, Space Needle, and other attractions.

The children had a home stay meal with their penpals' families and returned to school for presentations.

In May, when the Sunrise students take the Anacortes ferry to Sydney, the children will be on the receiving end of hospitality at their buddies' school. It will be their turn to be the guests.
