Holy Week events offer reflection and fellowship

Christians throughout the world will mark the holiest week of the year with special worship services and events. The week begins with Palm Sunday and ends with Easter. Because the date of Easter moves in relation to the full moon and the Spring Equinox, this year Holy Week is April 16-23.

At Tolt Congregational United Church of Christ (4851 Tolt Ave., Carnation), special events are planned for Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter.

On April 16, the 10 a.m. Sunday School will remember the events of these special days with a "Walk Through Holy Week." The 11 a.m. worship service will begin in Plymouth Hall with a re-creation of Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem and will include a re-telling of the passion story.

Jesus' Last Supper will be remembered and celebrated over a Soup Supper, starting at 6 p.m. on April 20. Because the soup is being provided, participants are asked to please call the church office by Wednesday, so there will be enough soup for everyone. Children are encouraged to attend. This experientially-based worship service will be held in Plymouth Hall.

A meditative worship service will be held on Good Friday, April 21, at 7:30 p.m., remembering the crucifixion of Jesus. This meditative service will be held in the Nan Fullerton Stuart Memorial Chapel, the beautiful stone chapel in downtown Carnation where the Tolt Church meets. Childcare will be available.

There will be a vigil in the chapel all Saturday night, April 22, with people taking turns keeping watch. A sign-up sheet is available in Plymouth Hall. Resource materials will be available to those keeping watch.

The congregation will celebrate Christ's resurrection with a Sunrise Service at MacDonald Park at 6 a.m. Participants are asked to please bring a lawn chair (and maybe one to share). The group gathers near the Red Barn. Following the service, a potluck breakfast will begin at around 8 a.m. at the Tolt Church.

The Festival Worship Service, complete with special music, begins at 11 a.m. There will be no Sunday School on Easter.
