Cedarcrest grad to attend Naval Flight Officer school

Michael Robert Beard, a 1994 Cedarcrest High School graduate, will receive his bachelor of science degree in history and a commission as an Ensign in the United States Navy at a ceremony to be held in Annapolis on May 24.

Beard, a lifelong Duvall resident, joined the Navy as an enlisted person in 1994. He received his basic training at Great Lakes Naval Base near Chicago. He was sent to NAS Millington in Memphis, Tennessee, to complete advanced training in Aircraft Systems Technology. While at Millington, he joined the Navy's demonstration marching unit known as the Crackerjacks. He received his ATAN and Aircrew Rating in June of 1995.

He was selected to attend the Naval Academy Prep School in Newport, Rhode Island, in July of 1995. He graduated from the prep school in 1996 and was appointed to the United States Naval Academy by Admiral C.O. Larson. He was one of only 50 enlisted personnel to accomplish this in that year.

Upon graduation, Beard will serve on the staff of the Commandant of the Naval Academy until November of 2000. He has received orders to attend the Naval Flight Officer School at Pensacola, Florida. Beard plans to spend some of his graduation leave with his family in Duvall. He also hopes to visit several of his shipmates in Paris, France.
