Woodinville Defense stops Rebel uprising
By Russ Paris
Woodinville Falcon's playing their 2nd consecutive Thursday night game at Pop Keeney Field used a swarming defense to put down Juanita High School 23 to 7. Every time a white shirted Rebel would run, a swarm of green jersey defenders would fly to the ball. The deadly green defense held Juanita to just 5 yards rushing for the night compared to 165 yards gained rushing for the Falcons.
Kyle West's 12 tackles led the way for the Falcon stop unit.
The 1st period started with the Rebels making the most of their yards for the evening on 2 long drives. The 1st drive bogged down as the Falcons dug in. The 2nd drive also lost momentum as the Falcons held at the 27. On 4th down however, Rebel quarterback Junior A.J. Parnell found senior wide receiver Matt Tippin uncovered in the corner of the end zone and threw him the Rebel's only score of the evening. Jerad Jennings extra point made it 7 to 0 at the end of 1 period.
In the 2nd period the Falcon offense came to life scoring two touchdowns in 48 seconds.
The first was a lesson is running the option for Juanita by WHS Junior Quarterback Kevin Agnew. He faked the ball to Blake McIntosh drawing most of the Rebel defense into the middle then sprinted 12 yards around the left end for the score. Ben Hoefer kick then tied the game at 7 at the 10:48 mark of the 2nd period.
On the following kickoff WHS Junior Linebacker Eric Fergen's hard hit caused the Juanita ballcarrier to fumble that was recovered by Falcon Jacob Stern. taking advantage of the Rebel's misfortune quarterback.
Kevin Agnew went for the kill. He passed 27 yards to leaping Casey Priseman, a sophmore, getting his first score. Ben Hoefer's kick at the 10 minute mark made it WHS 14, JHS 7.
It was a beautiful spiral passed between two underclassmen. Falcon fans hope to see a lot of connections the next two years between these two.
"The line gave me great protection tonight, they really worked hard on pass protection all week at practice," said quarterback Kevin Agnew. Agnew hit 83 percent of his passes, going 5 completions in 6 attempts for 53 yards. Agnew also had 61 yards rushing for 104 all purpose yards. The leading rusher for WHS was senior Ivanhoe who had 64 yards on 6 carries.
"All defenses including Juanita key in on our fullback. We faked to "The Diesel" McIntosh and he did such a good job acting like he had the ball it opened up the yards for myself, Leo and Jacob Stern," said quarterback Agnew.
The Falcons put the game away in the 3rd Quarter by scoring a safety on a high snap to the punter and then Agnew 3rd or 3 TD's on a 8 yard scramble.
The 3rd and 4th period both ended with the score WHS 23 to JHS 7.
It was the attacking green defense that shut down the Rebels for the last 3 1/2 quarters of the game. The Falcons also had great defensive effort from Eric Fergen 7 tackles and two caused fumbles. Jacob Stern and Ben Tomco each had 7 tackles and 1 fumble recovery. Two of Tomco's tackles went for sacks on Juanita Quarterback Pannell.
The Falcons are now two wins and one loss for the season. They play again next Thursday at Redmond.
