Pastor drafts Death Penalty curriculum

While on sabbatical this summer, Jeffrey Spencer (Pastor at Tolt Congregational United Church of Christ) drafted an adult Death Penalty curriculum.
The public is invited to participate in the testing of new curriculum. The class will meet at the Tolt Church, 4851 Tolt Avenue, Carnation, on Thursday evenings, 7:30 to 8:30, Oct. 5 through Dec.7 (skipping Thanksgiving, of course). Those who want to take the class, should call the church office (425-333-4254) to register.
"This is an attempt to study the death penalty from both a social and a theological perspective," Spencer said.
Spencer says he has spent about 200 hours researching and writing this first draft.
"The next step is to try teaching it to gather feedback for improving it," he said. He will ask class members to do some evaluations.
Spencer, a strong opponent of the death penalty, said, "My hope is that I have presented the material in a fair and balanced manner, in a way that fosters conversation and reflection."
Once he has received feedback, he plans to do some re-writing and then pass the curriculum on to the national settings of the United Church of Christ for possible publication.
