Rosemary McAuliffe (D) incumbent
Family, residence, education and current occupation/legislative position?
Husband, Jim McAuliffe, married 38 years; six grown children and nine grandchildren; residence, Bothell; education, BS in nursing; occupation, self-employed; owner of Hollywood Schoolhouse and Hana Sushi Restaurant. Currently, Senator of the 1st District.
Why are you running for office?
To continue my work in education reform and restructuring, to help all students meet our higher academic standards. To serve the people of the 1st District and represent them in Olympia. As a small business owner, I want to continue to work on a positive climate for business and to retain and build a strong economy with family-wage jobs.
If elected, how do you plan to work toward making life better for your constituency?
I have the leadership needed to bring people together to solve problems we face today. I will continue to work to build strong communities where families can live, work, learn and find recreational activities. This builds strong families and strong communities.
What do you love to do outside of politics?
Play with my grandchildren; volunteer to restore Bothell Main Street to a vitality that is attractive and alive for the community to enjoy; work at Hollywood Schoolhouse.
What is the last book you read that you enjoyed?
"Victory In Our Schools" by Major General John Stanford, Superintendent of Seattle Public Schools

Wife, Meghan; four children, Max, Mary, Luke and Hannah. Blanchet High School 1981; Univ. of Wash. 1986; owner/manager of Van Hollebeke's Landscape Maintenance; former Chair, 1st District Democrats, 1989-91; current Republican PCO St. Mark's Commission, Pres. 1996-99
Why running ...?
I am running because I believe I can better and more accurately reflect the views of our community in Olympia. As a father, a husband, a homeowner and a small business owner, I share our community's concern for quality education, ensure local control of our schools by school boards and parents, and to provide education choices so parents can choose a different school for their children if the one they are in is not making the grade.
If elected ...?
One of my immediate priorities will be to ensure that our public education system provides a quality education, ensure local control of our schools by school boards and parents, and to provide education choices so parents can choose a different school for their children if the one they are in is not making the grade.
I enjoy spending time with my children and going on hikes with my family or walks on the beach on Camano Island.
Last book read and enjoyed?
