Community invited to take part in at Handel's 'Messiah'
The Bothell, North Seattle and Shoreline Stakes of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints are sponsoring the open production of George Frederic Handel's perennial holiday classic, The Messiah, to be performed on Saturday, Nov. 25, in Woodinville, and Sunday, Nov. 26, in North Seattle.
Admission is free, and all are invited to join the choir or the audience.
Since its debut in Dublin in 1741, Handel's Messiah has been an inspiration to both lovers of the music and lovers of the message.
"We felt that a sing-along Messiah would be a good way to put everyone in the Christmas Spirit," said Jackie Byrd, who serves on the event's coordinating committe. "Although we have some real professionals helping with the difficult parts, we expect that most of the choir will be made up of people who just want to join in - without all the pressure that a more formal production might have. We would love to have an audience, but we would be just as pleased to have everyone who comes to join the choir, too."
Full orchestra under the direction of accomplished conductor Robert V. Thrugood of Bothell will accompany the choir, with solo performances by Jean Mishler (soprano), Bonnie Thomas (alto), Tony Kibbie (tenor) and Rob Patterson (bass). Those who would like an opportunity to join the orchestra are also welcome.
Choir and orchestra participants who have their own music are invited to bring it; otherwise, music will be provided.
"We can't promise that we will be able to sing like the Morman Tabernacle Choir," confessed Robert Haynie, who is also helping plan the production, "but we do expect it be an enjoyable and spiritually uplifting time, and a great way to bring the community together to celebrate this wonderful time of the year."
The Bothell, North Seattle and Shoreline Stakes of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints are ecclesiatical units each comprised of between five and seven local congregations.
The first performance, on Nov. 25 will begin at 7 p.m. and will be hosted at the Bothell Stake Center, 16500 124th NE, Woodinville.
The second performance will be Sunday, Nov. 26 at 7 p.m. at the Seattle North Stake Center, 5701 8th NE, Seattle .
