Washington State PTA to award $55,000 in scholarships

The Washington State PTA, through its Scholarship Foundation, will award $55,000 in college scholarships for the 2001-2002 academic year. Scholarships of $1,000 will be given to recipients entering four-year, post-secondary institutions. Five hundred dollar scholarships will be awarded for community colleges, voc-tech schools or other accredited institutions.
A scholarship applicant must be a graduate of a Washington State public high school. These individuals need not be current graduates. Graduates from prior years may apply as long as they are entering their freshman year. The financial need of the applicant shall be the primary consideration.
The entire scholarship program is financed through a unique statewide volunteer recognition program. Local PTA units throughout the state identify and honor volunteers in the community who have significantly worked for the health, welfare, safety, and education of children and youth. Donations made in the honoree's name provide the funds for the program.
Applications may be obtained from high school counselors or by contacting the Washington State PTA Scholarship Foundation. The deadline for applying is March 1, 2001.
