Musician to appear at Barnes & Noble

Doug Fleming, a well-known Northwest musician, will perform excerpts from his new CD at the Woodinville Barnes & Noble at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 6. Maltby resident Mike Young will play bongos and flute.
Fleming's CD,"Little Square Wheels," is geared for children ages two to eight and features original interactive songs with a folk/rock flavor.
"In the late 1990s I attempted to sell my songs and market myself as a songwriter," said Fleming. "I was unsuccessful so I decided to be a singer/songwriter and make my own CD with a small independent label, iPoet Music in Lancaster, Calif.
"... The CD contains a song, "Do Your Motion," which directs listeners to stand up, jump and shout, move their bodies up and down and turn them around and around."
In addition to Fleming's movement songs, there are a number of tunes on the CD with relevant messages such as "Wait Your Turn." Other songs on the CD like "Sounds Like a Hot Dog" are just for fun.
"I feel a rapport with children and enjoy the fact that when I am performing they are comfortable coming right up and sitting at my feet," said Fleming. "I am a low-key person and let my songs and guitar playing speak for themselves."

Fleming attended Lakeside School and graduated from the University of California at Santa Cruz in economics.
He played in rock bands in both Santa Cruz and Seattle in the 1980s. "It seems like a natural marriage of both teaching and music to produce the CD and to perform for children," said Fleming.
A Seattle resident, Fleming is married with two young children. For the past year he has been performing throughout the Northwest for story times in bookstores and in schools. He also books individual parties.
