The better to see them with
Carnation Elementary Safety Patrol members Chad Soptich (l) and Josh Stark wear new reflective vests and carry brighter orange flags as part of the Washington Traffic Safety Commission's effort to make young school crossing guards more visible to motorists. Each school in the state received two free vests and two flags from the state. The program was made possible by the work of two PTA mothers from Yakima who persuaded the Legislature to double the traffic fine assessed for speeding near schools. The money from the fines paid for the vests and flags and the bright yellow-green signs the state is putting up in school zones.
