Adventures in Leadership

The YMCA of Greater Seattle will accept applications through April 16 for the fifth summer of "The Patsy Collins Adventure in Leadership for Girls of Promise," a program which helps middle school girls overcome the tendency to withdraw from leadership roles in early adolescence. The program features successful female role models - including the program's namesake - who share their own experiences in becoming business and community leaders.
The 18-day residential program for girls entering eighth or ninth grade next fall will be offered in two sessions (July 8 to 25 and July 29 to Aug. 15) at the Dederer Family Conference Center at YMCA Camp Orkila on Orcas Island. As in previous sessions, successful female role models from business, arts, media and community organizations will play a key role in the program. The program features a healthy balance of fun and educational activities, including: hands-on workshops in communications skills, leadership styles and problem solving, wellness activities including yoga, aerobics and dance; service projects designed by the girls, and more traditional camp activities such as hiking, campouts, swimming, boating, climbing wall and a ropes course.
An informational brochure and application packets can be requested by calling the Metrocenter YMCA at (206) 382-5322.
Scholarship assistance is available to enable participation, thanks to the YMCA's Partners With Youth fund.
