Writer is walking to honor courage and fight breast cancer

I've made a commitment to a very special and powerful event in the fight against breast cancer. The weekend of Aug. 10th, I will be participating in the first Seattle Avon's Breast Cancer 3 Day. I'll walk about 60 miles from Enumclaw into downtown Seattle with more than 2000 other men and women who believe in this cause. We are hoping to each raise several thousand dollars for breast cancer research and awareness and early detection for all women. The net proceeds from the event will benefit Avon's Breast Cancer Awareness Crusade, a non-profit initiative of Avon Products, Inc. Last year about 45 million dollars went to grants and research. The 3 day walk is Avon's biggest fund-raiser and will be happening in 8 other major cities throughout the U.S. this year.
All of us know someone who has been affected by this disease. I have a co-worker who was diagnosed early last year. I have watched her bravely go through such an awful process to survive, at 33 she lost a breast, and went through chemo and baldness, then radiation that burned her skin and medication including steroids which made her weight and face balloon. She laughingly called herself a Smurf. She was sick and yet worked and laughed everyday. I had a hard time ever complaining about sore feet at the end of a long. Now a litter over a year later she is saving money for reconstructive surgery and exercising to bring her body back to its original weight. . . so much courage. I felt the need to support that courage by going out and raising money to help battle this disease. Elizabeth is only one story, there are thousands more, like my Dad's cousin Betty or my sister-in-law Sue or my sister's college friend who lost her life because of breast cancer.
I am writing to all my friends and family and coworkers in the hopes that you will help me raise this money. I need your help to achieve my goal, but women everywhere need this money to conquer breast cancer. The walk is in August but pledges must be received by July 1. Please send yours today. Please pledge your support and make a tax deductible contribution now.
   Thank you for your generosity
